01 ABOUT THE PROJECT
This 30-minute documentary showcases the sustainable lifestyle and pursuit of animal welfare at the non-profit organization Tenerife Horse Rescue. Over a period of three months, I lived closely with the founders Emma and Edo at the sustainable animal sanctuary. Their deep passion for animal welfare and their dedication to an ecological lifestyle are highlighted in the film.
Through inspiring conversations with the founders, this documentary prompts viewers to reflect on their own choices and commitment to a more sustainable future, pushing the boundaries of what is possible.

03 THE ORGANISATION
Tenerife Horse Rescue is a non-profit organization founded in 2008 that describes itself as a sustainable animal sanctuary located in the southern region of Tenerife, specifically Arico. Their primary objective is to give a voice to animals that cannot speak for themselves. Over 400 animals, including horses, donkeys, dogs, cats, goats, sheep, chickens, pigs, bearded dragons, ferrets, and various others, are rescued and cared for by the organization. Moreover, the organization takes pride in its commitment to environmental sustainability.
All electricity is generated through solar power, water system pipes are heated using horse manure, waste food is converted into compost, and the organization follows a 'freegan' approach to eating. Additionally, the entire facility is constructed from recycled materials and clay, further emphasizing its dedication to eco-friendly practices. Lastly, it is independent of government funding, relying entirely on the kindness of its supporters and dedicated volunteers to fulfill its mission.

04 THE TRACK SYSTEM
Back in 2023, the organization acquired 20.000 m² of land to establish a Track System. This facility enables horses to move on their own, engaging in their natural behaviors.
This system typically consists of a path in the shape of an aight, with water sources, shaded areas, and feeding points at various intervals. These features ensure that the horses are encouraged to move throughout the day, promoting their physical health and mental well-being.
Implementing a Track System would be a significant advancement for Tenerife Horse Rescue. Previously, the organization relied on traditional methods such as walking horses to ensure they received enough exercise.
However, with the Track System in place, horses would have the freedom to be actice independently, reducing the need for human intervention and allowing the organization to focus on other aspects of animal care. Additionally, the Track System would increase the capacity of horses the sanctuary could accommodate, estimated to be far more than twice as many.
However, it's important to note that the implementation of the Track System requires a significant amount of funding. The organization estimates that a sum of €20.000 would be necessary to cover the costs.
